How to Engage in Safe Personal Computing

May 30th, 2007 | By | Category: Virtual IT

Many small businesses are at high risk for catastrophic data loss and security issues when it comes to personal computing.  Non-enterprise companies need to watch their safety when it comes to dealing with daily tasks associated with computers.  Problems can range from minor business interruption caused by computer melt-downs to total security breaches that can cost companies a great deal of time and an even greater amount of money.

The Main Problem with Safe Personal Computing

With solo practitioners and small, non-enterprise businesses, there is usually no IT person on payroll.  This means no one is regularly monitoring data security.  Small business owners need to learn to outsource this task to a local computer consulting firm.

PC Backup

Typically, those without full-time IT staff are not backing up data often enough – as in, they are not backing up data on a DAILY basis to contribute to safe personal computing practices.  Also, they do not have automated backup systems in place to protect them in case someone forgets to do it.  One theft, fire, flood, tornado or other issue in a situation without proper backup can cause a complete meltdown.

The Biggest Threat to Safety

Viruses, worms and spyware exist, and the biggest problem when it comes to businesses that don’t engage in safe personal computing practices is denial.  Similarly, because they think viruses can’t happen to them, they don’t update their virus protection software often enough or automatically.

The Bottom Line About Safe Personal Computing

Businesses looking to improve the safety of their personal computing practices need to hire a responsible computer consulting firm, automate backup systems and keep their spyware and virus protection software up-to-date.
