An IT Solution for Small Businesses: Which Type of Network?
Dec 6th, 2007 | By Joshua Feinberg | Category: Virtual ITMany small business owners wonder which type of network IT solution is ideal to help them manage data and their computer systems.
Real Client-Server Networks
Most small businesses with no in-house IT manager wait too long to upgrade an IT solution to one that includes a real client-server network. Why? Because while trying to handle dozens of crises and wearing multiple “hats,” putting out fires all day, etc., no one is actually thinking about computer systems … until way too late!
Why Not Peer-to-Peer Networks?
When a small business relies on a casual IT solution – an ad-hoc, peer-to-peer network – the business is deciding to place no importance on data protection and security. It’s the equivalent of taking the locks off a store door or office, throwing away the burglar alarm and leaving personnel files with sensitive information sitting out in the reception area. Relying on a peer-to-peer network as an IT solution can be even worse than doing that.
Mobile Work Forces Need Different Resources
Small business owners with mobile work forces can’t safely make resources available through a VPN or intranet/extranet if someone in the company has his/her own server. The only cost effective IT solution for managing data protection in a small business is by consolidating resources onto one or two well-managed and very secure server(s).
