Can IT Freelancing Work?

Can you use IT freelancing to build a profitable business?

The biggest mistake IT freelancing professionals make is underestimating their expenses and charging way below ideal rates for services.  There are specific formulas that can be followed by IT freelancers in order to help them with profitability and sustainability for their businesses.

Don’t Just Serve Everyone

Many involved in IT freelancing also try to mistakenly provide services to any customers that knock on their doors when they should be properly qualifying prospects based on criteria such as location, size, software/hardware needs, IT contractors, etc.  Using systems for screening and developing relationships with good clients while IT freelancing can save huge amounts of frustration further down the road.

Focused Marketing

If you want to do IT freelancing the right way, you need to use very targeted marketing strategies.  A lot of freelancers think that all small businesses are the same.  However, a tiny one-person company that may spend $300 with your company is an ENTIRELY different animal than a 10-person company that needs you once a month consistently and can bring you a great profit.   You really need to steer clear of a lot of the tiny, tiny SOHO customers that are just too small to benefit you when you’re IT freelancing.
