Small Business Management: Three Tips

May 17th, 2007 | By | Category: Project Management

Small business management can be a real challenge for computer consulting professionals and anyone trying to run a small business.  The following tips can help overcome some of the major hurdles that arise.

Small Business Management:  Don’t Fear Delegation

One of the biggest problems small business owners face is waiting too long to recruit middle managers.  Because of a fear of task delegation, many small business owners will spend valuable time on mundane day-to-day tasks instead of on important CEO strategy planning.

Small Business Management:  Staff Retention

All businesses, small and large have difficulty with staff retention and with decreasing staff turnover rates.  Some small businesses that are family owned have too little staff turnover because of the difficulty of firing or simply criticizing family members.  Small business owners need enough new staff to keep ideas fresh and enough retention to keep efficiency and morale high.

Small Business Management:  Specialization

A lot of small businesses don’t have enough specialization.  Specializing by finding an under-served niche is one of the best ways for a small business to stand apart from the crowd and protect itself from competition with huge competitors.  No small business should attempt to serve all people in a given area.

The Bottom Line About Small Business Management

To increase efficiency when it comes to small business management, company owners need to get past fear of delegating responsibility, increase staff retention and the hiring of new staff to keep ideas exciting and specialize in a niche to decrease profit-killing competition.
