11 IT Security Tips for Small Businesses
1. Don’t write logon and password information on Post-It notes next to your monitor.
2. Don’t share logon and password information with peers … not even with your supervisor!
3. Don’t give logon/password details to someone calling on the phone asking for it … no matter what!
4. Be sure your WiFi-ready notebook or PDA is protected with data encryption and an appropriate firewall.
5. Don’t walk away from your desk until you lock your keyboard.
6. When you are in the corporate network or extranet from an alternate location (aka, home), don’t walk away from your desk without locking your keyboard, particularly if others share the computer.
7. Don’t forward chain-letter e-mails or hoaxes.
8. Don’t open suspicious e-mail attachments if you want to protect your IT security.
9. Never do anything to disable or tamper with your anti-virus or anti-spyware software; this can cause your IT security to be compromised!
10. Put data in the file path location where you know it will get daily backup.
11. Don’t use the “remember password” options in browser-based applications if you want to really protect your IT security.
