IT Consulting: Which Tasks Should Be Done In-House and Which Should Be Outsourced?
Aug 26th, 2007 | By Joshua Feinberg | Category: Project ManagementMany small business owners with IT consulting needs and some capacity to take care of them in-house wonder how to manage their IT assets to get the most value. Which IT consulting tasks can be done in-house and which will need to be outsourced to a specialized, trained professional?
Maturing IT Needs
Small businesses will eventually come to a place where they need to decide when and how to “grow up” their IT consulting needs. Very small businesses with 1-10 employees often will use very inexpensive IT tools that are only meant for home office users. Finding a local IT consulting expert that can help select scalable, secure IT tools appropriate for a company’s needs and budgets is an important step to truly maximizing potential.
Hiring IT Consulting Professionals
Small companies often will not know how to screen, hire and manage an outsourced IT consulting firm. For example, an owner of a remodeling company most likely knows what to ask when interviewing a plumber or an electrician, but would not know the first thing about hiring an IT consultant. There are actually about 8-10 questions to ask to get the right person for the job.
Bringing in an IT Staff
There is a natural time when it pays for small businesses to get an in-house IT staff instead of outsourcing needs to IT consulting professionals. Most small companies, however don’t really understand the true costs of hiring a real IT department and do it prematurely.
